Alright, I do love the Deer Hunter. But I don't think it is the best Vietnam War movie. Platoon is the absolute best. But what this movie has that no other 'nam movie has is that it shows how the war changes three friends drastically. This movie perfectly shows how effective this was on the mind and body, and how horrible it truly was. We start of with a truly boring wedding, just shown to give more of an insight into these guys friendship. They go off hunting, and what do you know, De Niro bags a huge buck. The first act is truly boring, which makes me have to take it from a 10 to a 9. The wedding scenes are way to long. The next act goes about two months later, in which the buddies are fighting in the war with each other. They get captured and taken to a prison over a river. The Vietnamese force the prison inhabitants to play Russian Roulette. One of the friends can't take the game, and is thrown into a pit of rats, and would die if the other two didn't play. They manage to trick the Vietnamese and escape the floating prison. The movie's last act finds two of the friends back home, with the other still in Vietnam. De Niro goes over to Vietnam, and gets leads to find Walken. He finds him playing Russian Roulette in seedy bars. The two of them play a last game of Russian Roulette, and one of course loses.

The other great, crowd scene was the ship, the Moshilu entering New York harbor carrying the young Vito Corleone and a sea of immigrants seeking a new life. From the late teens to mid 20s you shared it all and you can't remember how you were able to afford it. You argued from time to time and someone was always the asshead (guy who started fights when out, etc) but you had incredible times together and have the nicknames or scares to back it up. You still see each other from time to time but its just a tad different. (jobs, family, kids, new location - the responsibilities of life) But that bond that you shared together is deep and its something you truly wish you had again. True Friends. It's early 90's and the four of us leaving a club around 2am feeling no pain, into the one car our friend has and we're hungry so we drive to the one part of town where you know you can get a good bite to eat rather cheap. The radio is on (couldn't afford cassette or CD in in the car) and on comes Jet by Paul McCartney and the Wings. Four voices singing the harmony to this day never sounded or stayed with me better. That wedding scene alone had me absolutely in love. My Take: Many people have criticized the early part of the movie for being slow or uninteresting, but this portion of the movie was essential to set the background of the story with regard to the ethnic heritage of the principal characters (ironically Russian, given the Vietnam war) the closeness of their bond to one another, and also, to define the deer hunter metaphor graphically through the sequence of the actual hunt which serves as a foil to the later hunting sequence. This early part of the film, which so many disparage, resonated with me greatly as I am a first generation American who grew up in a European family environment - caught between the American ethos and the echoes of my ethnic ancestry - where weddings and other feasts reminded us of our historic past despite our fierce loyalty to our adopted country. This extra level of bonding in the film creates a familial relationship between the younger characters which is one of almost brotherhood and sisterhood as opposed to just residents of the same community. The Second Deer Hunt: The movie plays out like a novel, as it should, but many people who go to the cinema want only the action and not the underlying foundation upon which the writer has constructed his story. This is tragically unfortunate because they miss so much of what is being portrayed within the deeper context of the story. For instance: the scene where Michael climbs the mountain and confronts the deer the second time, after Vietnam, was one of the most powerful and intense scenes I have ever experienced in cinema; however, most of the viewers of the movie forgot it almost instantly though they will never forget the Russian roulette scenes, because they were unable to identify with what the writer was saying in that scene - and no, it's not entirely about Michael's new-found respect for life. This scene is open to vast interpretation. This is only my take, but I think I am close to the mark: Michael is a deer hunter. When hunting deer HE has the power and the deer is unable to defend himself other than by using his wits and the abilities that nature gave him. In Vietnam Michael is the deer and the Vietcong have the power. Michael must use HIS wits and the abilities nature gave HIM, but like the deer he is at an enormous disadvantage. He outmaneuvers his hunter and escapes. Michael has learned what it is like to be the deer. When the deer in this scene courageously stares him down the deer is symbolically asking him a question. The deer is asking if Michael has learned anything - asking him if after his experience in Vietnam he realizes that they are now brothers. In a sudden flash of intuition it all becomes clear to Michael. He lets the deer win this time to reclaim his own innocence and asks the deer if he is satisfied with the deal. OKAY? The deer calmly walks away. He must know. He shouts again. OKAAAAAAAY. and he receives Nature's echoed response. Okay.
